A lot of the time, I find that education needs a bigger picture. Lesson topics are so much more appealing when they are anchored in something bigger than themselves. For example:
- How to Succeed in All You Do
- How to Start a Conversation with Anyone
- How to be Happy
- How to Let Go of Fear
- How to Heal Pain
- How to Read Like a Rockstar
- How to be Faster Than a Calculator
- How to Leave a Legacy
Sounds much better than:
Today I will be able to...
- Skip count by fives
- Use beginning word sounds to help me figure out a word
- Identify and apply three strategies to cope with fear/pain
Even if the crux of the lesson does get to those less appealing parts, they won't be thinking of it that way. It really is all about marketing it the right way and growing qualities in children, not load their trivia list with endless facts. However, the plan to get to that goal should be something concrete and not cheesy, which may be hard to implement. That being said, I am currently in the process of creating these "lesson plans"...mainly for myself, because I need to learn and think it through, haha. Ironic is my middle name. But I'll be glad to share them soon.
On another note, BACK TO MY STUDY ABROAD INFO:
There are still FOUR (4) WEEKS left to apply to the YES Abroad program--deadline: December 1, 2015. I hope to be interviewing YES and NSLI-Y applicants this year, either in the DMV area (DC, Maryland, Virginia) or Nashville, TN.
I will mostly likely update my study abroad info pages in the next few weeks.
Yay! I always love it when a new cycle starts--best of luck to everyone!
