If you read my last post, you'll know how I ended my NSLI-Y endeavors. May the CBYX one begin! :)
Alright. So I find out about CBYX, and at first, was a bit disappointed. Germany? That's the ONLY choice? What am I going to Germany for? Why would I want to learn German? I could not see the purpose of going there. The only thing I knew about Germany...was what I had learned in my U.S. World Affairs class. I was very close to not applying at all. In fact, I put it off for a long time (CBYX had a later deadline than NSLI-Y).
But the voice in my head went something like this:
Michelle, why not give it a shot? Don't you love learning about different cultures and languages? And this is a FULL scholarship, worth ~$15,000! Come on, Michelle, you have nothing to lose.
The other voice in my head went something like this:
Nothing to lose?! Heck, you have so much to lose! Your health, your sleep, and your college application time. You need to get a move on and stop thinking about study abroad. SO. NOT. FEASIBLE. Michelle, your health is going downhill. Get some sleep.
This conflict was unsolvable. Or, at least I thought it was. In the end, as you may have guessed, I applied. Needless to say, I did screw up my health/sleeping pattern for a week, because I stayed up until 2 AM writing all those essays. But I was happy about them. Those essays were much better than the ones I wrote for NSLI-Y, and because the application was longer and more thorough (6 essays, as opposed to 2) I felt like the selection committee could really get to know me. Plus, I had the time of my LIFE writing those essays. I loved each and every question. I know, it sounds corny.
