Man. I am writing this after I have spent quite a while looking for songs that fit the following criteria:
1. Clear enunciation
2. Catchy (needs to have some repetition)
3. Clean language
4. Modern vocabulary/grammar structures
5. Not all about love
6. Appropriate for the adult age group
7. Fits language criteria (in my case, Chinese)
DEAR LORD. IT'S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE! I began looking for songs after a student had requested Chinese songs to help him learn Chinese. I thought it wouldn't be too hard, since I'd say that he's at the intermediate level. But all the murmuring (hello, Jay Chou) or cute, high pitched, and hard to understand songs (a large portion of female artists) don't fit the bill. Songs that sound decent have vocabulary that's too hard. The only good news is that lyric vocabulary tends to be repetitive. For Chinese music, it's usually dreams, love (or lack thereof), moon, stars, sky, birds, and the color blue. I came so close to giving up on this search, but I later determined it's still a worthwhile one because I am positive that this one student is not the only one who wants to use Chinese music as a learning resource.
