-Yo. When is it Kaffee Trinken?!
This is honestly my favorite time of the day. I'm not even kidding. Everyday, at approximately 3:30, my family has afternoon coffee. That's where all the sweets take stage, and man, I LOVE German cake and cookies. I know, I'm going to get so fat. There's a reason why "AFS" also stands for "Another Fat Student!"
-My New Found Love
..is baking and cooking. Seriously, I cannot stand bread, potatoes in sauce, or noodles 24/7. So sometimes I make myself a makeshift Chinese lunch..chicken corn soup, dumplings, scallion pancakes, noodles..RICE. :)
-Making Salad
Of all things that my host mom asked me to make, she chose salad. Like what? I can only cook Chinese food! Plus, my taste buds are probably like really different from hers, because I don't like anything she likes, lol :) Usually I end making something I like and she..doesn't really like it..oh well. But the 9 and 12 year old are good with the stuff I make.
-Lebenshilfe
Translated literally, "Life Help." This is an organization that takes care of people who are mentally, physically and/or socially handicapped. They had a bazaar a while back, where they sold handmade stuff, typical German Weihnachten food, and tralalalala (lol, that's "etc./blahblahblah" auf Deutsch :)) I got some awesome Apfel Punsch (apple punch, if you couldn't tell already)!
-Spielnachmittag
That's basically like a Games Night (or afternoon, should I say). Here, we played all sorts of board games. Germans are much more interested in board games than Americans, in my opinion. Their games are also more complicated, more adventure based, and require more thinking (less luck involved). We played Quirkle (don't you just love that name?), Set, and Ladybrinth. Oh, they also have TETRIS as a board game. Can you believe that? Tetris.
-Heavenly Yogurt
Man, the yogurt here is so good. I go through like a gallon in 3-4 days. I think my host mom thinks I'm a bit insane. Sometimes I just eat that instead of bread..you know, when I get too tired of it. I'll post some of my favorite brands after I get the "Products from Germany" page going.
-Smoking Scene
Ew. This deserves its own post, but I don't have time right now and really just need to spazz about how much people smoke here. It sucks. They even have cigarette vending machines, and yeah. It sucks. There are sometimes posters in the train stations that say "Smoking can kill you." But really, does that help? My host brother smokes too, and it drives me insane. Even if you don't smoke in the house, your clothes smell like crap. And he constantly makes the whole upstairs smell like crap.
-Good Academic News!
I understood math today, and was one of the few people who got the question right. The whole class applauded me; it was quite amusing. Except for when the teacher said, "...and our guest from America has the correct answer." Blarg. I don't want to be called "a guest" :( I want to be seen as someone who is part of the class! In other good news, I scored full points on the Spanish exam, but I'm not so proud of that because I had 3 years of Spanish in the US and already knew the material.
-Good Social News!
THIS. This is what I am super proud of, even more than my academic news.
a) My host brother finally asked me a question about America. Ok, it was about McDonalds, but I don't care. At least now I know he doesn't hate me, because it seemed like that way before. He's been really happy looking these days--don't know what's up. Sometimes, I think Germans are a bit bipolar..they seem all nice to you one day, and the next, they don't talk to you (this isn't everyone, of course).
b) I got invited to go to the movies! YAY ME. They're gonna watch The Hobbit. And go to an new, epic "nerd" store, as they call it. Too bad I can't actually go, because I need to go to the AFS Christmas Party this weekend. But you know what? It's the invite that counts.
c) Someone just told me today that they were gonna cook me Chinese food because I was homesick for Chinese food. Oh my goodness, they're so sweet :) I thought it was funny too, that they wanted me to go to their house to taste their food. But again, it's the thought that counts.
