Happy December everyone! As all exchange students to Germany know, Weihnachtsmarkt is a huge deal here. It's basically a big outdoor market selling a bunch of Christmas stuff--there are candles, lights, millions of wooden decorations, knit goods, etc. In terms of food, obviously good old German wurst! :) Amazing mushrooms, hot chocolate, beer, wine (GLUHWEIN!!), bread with huge pieces of meat, marmalade, und so weiter are all part of the list. So far, I've been to three of these Christmas markets. I went to the Weihnactsmarkt in Wolfenbuttel with a friend from school/ an international student group (it's like a 5 minute walk from GiS, my school), and then to the one in Braunschweig with people from church, and then to the one in Gosler with an exchange student group from the neaby college. Let me tell you, I love hanging out with Chinese people slightly older than me, because they treat me like a little kid and buy me everything :P I simply love them :D They are always like--
"Michelle, try this!"
-shoves food up my face-
"Wait, but aren't you going to eat it?"
"You try it first!"
"But..."
"Just try it! I'll bite the food from the other side, it doesn't matter!"
And in that manner, I get to try pretty much every single food being sold :)
What I've realized about Germans is that because it's so cold outside (yes, it snowed today), they rarely head outdoors at nightime. But when Christmas rolls around, they all come out of hiding. I was almost shocked at how many people there were..literally, it reminded me of China (especially the Gosler Weihnactsmarkt) because everyone was up against each other, and no one could move. Doesn't help that I walk-crash into everyone all the time.
I actually have a video from the Weihnactsmarkt, but it probably won't be up for a while because I need to edit it and such :)
