After School Activities

After school activities, or AGs, are not so popular, if offered at all. Luckily, they do have them in my school--event planning, choir, band, orchestra, language lessons, tutoring, environmental club, music engineering, robotics, etc.

However, no one will tell you these exist. Why? Because:
a) not so many people join them
b) there are no posters anywhere telling you they exist
c) people know about them since joining the school, and they forget that you don't know

Since the second semester just started, I zoomed straight to the office to inquire as to how I could get more involved. To my dismay, Film and Cooking were only for kids in grades 5-8. I never understand why they have age limitations on clubs--what's the difference between an 8th and 9th grader? To me, not so much.

After looking through the list of available activities, I had to make sure that they fit in my schedule. At my school, AGs are only offered Wednesdays and Thursdays during the 7th and 8th hour, or 1:30-3:00 PM. This basically means that if you have any other classes during that time, you can't take part. That is quite a shame.

Yesterday, I decided to check out Choir--in America, I did Chorus since the 5th grade, and always loved it. It was a relaxing class, although I sometimes disliked the repertoire. There were 12 other people there--4 sopranos, 5 altos, 1 tenor, and 2 basses.  Have you ever heard of a one tenor choir? I think not :) Anyways, the lady asked what part I sang back in the US. I always have a hard time explaining this, because I pretty much sing different parts depending on the song. But most of the time, I'm in the lowest voice group for girls..aka the Alto II/Contralto. People never believe this, because I'm so short, and apparently look like someone who would sing Soprano. Back in the US, I would even sing tenor, whenever there weren't enough guys in that section. And..it looks like it's going to happen here too. Oops. -.- I also listened to way too much African American/rap/gospel music when I was younger. Results of living in a Latino/African American community for 17 years of my life. My dad used to always ask me why I sang like a black person, and honestly, I couldn't think of any answer besides that.

Choir isn't too different here--the vocal exercises are all similar, and this choir sang a wide selection of music, which I loved. Here's the one we're working on now (it's actually a Christian song, and I've realized they sing a load of contemporary Christian music):

And not surprisingly, all the music we sang were in English =/ But other than that, I look forward to going again next week.

Today, I was supposed to go to Music Tech AG, where we create remixes, sing, play..and well, do everything with music. I love this kind of stuff, because I love seeing how little line waves (ok, they aren't always little) turn into beautiful sound. Manipulating sound through synthesizers, etc. is just interesting to me. Unforutnately, I brought the wrong computer to Germany (aka the one without my music tech stuff), and now, am a little sad person. So when I saw that this AG was being offered, I literally fell out of my chair.

The reason why I say "supposed" is because the AG's time got moved to Saturdays, at the teacher's house. Ok, since when was a club offered at a teacher's private house? It's the first time I ever heard anything like it. I also only had 4 hours of school today (done by 11:05), and even came back at 1:30, only to find out that it had been switched to another time and location. Great. But anyways, I'm looking forward to that one as well, and will update you guys :)

I promise I'll get around to writing about the AFS Halbzeit Camp as well..sometime :) There's just so much to say, and I'm getting a little lazy to type.

Using the Blog

Posts from 2012-2013 are mostly about my exchange year in Germany through CBYX.

Starting August 2016, I will write about my time in Taiwan as an ETA.

In between this time, you will find some of my random thoughts. Enjoy!
